Biography

Karissa is a photojournalist and illustrator—whose work centers on themes of environmental justice, decolonization and cultural heritage. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, she is a first-generation immigrant of East Indian ancestry and currently resides on the traditional territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation in British Columbia, Canada.

Rooted in a commitment to community and land, Karissa uses her lens to document stories of resilience, restoration, and connection. Her work often involves collaboration with Indigenous communities and environmental organizations, capturing the lived experiences behind conservation efforts and cultural revitalization

Through her illustrations, she passionately explores themes rooted in Indian and Caribbean traditions, examining how these cultural practices can be harnessed to promote justice, empowerment, and social change.  By blending vibrant imagery with thoughtful commentary, Karissa invites her audience to engage more deeply with the complexities of heritage, identity, and progress.
